China has condemned the shooting that occurred during US President Donald Trump’s reception of the White House Correspondents’ Association, Sky News reports.
In its initial comments following the shooting, Beijing states that it condemns acts of unlawful violence.
"China is paying attention to this shooting incident. We consistently oppose and condemn acts of illegal violence," says Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian at a press conference.
The agency notes that Donald Trump plans to visit Beijing on May 14 and 15 to meet with Xi Jinping during his first visit to the country in eight years.
Washington Hilton shooting
On the night of April 26, a shooting occurred at the Washington Hilton during an official dinner for the US President with media representatives. An unknown man entered the building and opened fire, forcing security services to urgently evacuate Donald Trump and other high-ranking officials.
One officer was injured in the incident, but thanks to his bulletproof vest, his life is not in danger. The attacker was quickly apprehended at the scene.
Following the incident, the US leader emphasized the need to complete construction of the Ballroom at the White House, which would meet the highest security standards. At the same time, there remains opposition in the US to the project, as its cost is estimated at $400 million.
Law enforcement later identified the shooter as 31-year-old Cole Allen, a teacher from Torrance, California. According to the White House, the suspect intended to kill the President.
Press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the shooter intended to assassinate Donald Trump and kill as many officials from his administration as possible.
