Amid an escalation of the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, diplomatic competition among major powers is intensifying, with China carefully signaling its approach to resolving the crisis, according to a Bloomberg publication.
China's approach to mediation
Beijing responded cautiously to statements by US President Donald Trump about his role in halting hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia.
During talks with representatives of both countries, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China’s efforts to promote peace and dialogue are never imposed on others and do not overstep boundaries. A similar message was conveyed in separate meetings with the Cambodian side.
Ceasefire and competition for influence
Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate ceasefire after a series of clashes that killed dozens of soldiers and civilians and forced more than half a million people to flee their homes. This marked the second truce in the past six months.
The situation has highlighted competition between the United States and China for influence in the region. Washington portrayed the agreement as the result of US pressure, including trade-related threats, while Beijing is positioning itself as a neutral mediator and questioning Western approaches to conflict resolution.
ASEAN's role and humanitarian aid
China said it is ready to support an observer mission by ASEAN and to provide humanitarian assistance. Cambodia has already received about $3 million, while Thailand is considering a similar offer.
At the same time, the durability of the ceasefire remains uncertain due to mine-related incidents in disputed areas.
On Monday, December 29, units of China’s People’s Liberation Army launched military exercises dubbed Justice Mission 2025 in waters and airspace around Taiwan, moves widely seen as another element of pressure by Beijing amid heightened regional tensions.
China’s Foreign Ministry has also announced sanctions against 10 individuals and 20 US defense companies in response to arms supplies to Taiwan, describing such actions as interference in China’s internal affairs and a threat to regional stability.
