Chief of Main Intelligence Directorate on Kraken unit
The special unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate, codenamed Kraken, began forming approximately 1.5 weeks before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The military was aware of Russia's preparations for war, so they initiated the establishment of an underground network in advance, states Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
According to him, 1.5 weeks before the Russian invasion, two officers departed for Kharkiv with weapons and ammunition to engage with the locals. They initiated the formation of a makeshift underground network and prepared to resist the Russian invaders.
At the same time, Budanov refuted the information that the Kraken special unit was supposedly comprised of football fans.
"Kraken had quite a diverse group. There were those referred to as fans, hooligans, many Azov veterans, as well as civilian men and women. It was a contrast because previously, women didn't serve in combat units. But there were many of them when I first arrived. Gender equality," said the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate.
Successes of Kraken
Recently, the reconnaissance special unit destroyed two observation towers within Russian territory.
In addition, the Kraken special unit used a drone to destroy an observation tower in the Bryansk region of the Russian Federation.
