Ukraine wants to end the war with Russia this year. However, Moscow is currently only pretending to engage in peace talks, states Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha in an interview with Yle.

The Foreign Minister voiced support for US President Donald Trump's promise to impose tough restrictions on Russia and countries trading with it in the coming days.

Sybiha believes that Trump is the only person the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, fears. According to him, the new sanctions against Russia will bring peace closer.

The minister also noted that the entire world is now watching to see whether the US leader will follow through on his promises.

"Sanctions must be devastating for the Russian economy. They must prevent Russia from fueling its war machine and trading with third countries," he emphasized.

Sybiha stressed that achieving peace this year remains Ukraine’s goal, even though Russia is only simulating peace talks to buy time and occupy new territories. At the same time, ending the war is in the interest not only of Ukraine.

"Right now, Ukraine is a guarantor of security. How the war ends will impact the security of Europe and other regions. This must be understood, and together we must force Russia to peace," he added.

Zelenskyy's proposal

Earlier today, August 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that he allegedly wants to end the war with Ukraine. However, according to him, this is only possible on Moscow’s terms.

In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that if this is truly a signal of readiness to end the war, then Ukraine’s proposal for a meeting at the leadership level remains valid.
