A federal court in Chicago has ordered Boeing to pay more than $28 million to the family of Shikha Garg, who was killed in the 737 MAX crash, Reuters reports.

Thus, the family of Shikha Garg, a UN environmental protection officer who was killed in the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, a 737 MAX, in 2019, will receive $35.85 million, including interest.

This is the first verdict among dozens of lawsuits filed after the crashes of two 737 MAX aircraft that together claimed 346 lives — Lion Air Flight 610, which crashed in Indonesia in 2018, and the Ethiopian Airlines flight in 2019.

Boeing is not expected to file an appeal. The company stated that it deeply sympathizes with the families of the victims and recognizes their right to seek compensation through the courts.

The family's lawyers, in turn, called the verdict "public accountability for Boeing's wrongful conduct."

The lawsuit alleged that the 737 MAX aircraft was defectively designed and that Boeing failed to adequately warn passengers and the public about potential risks.

To date, the American manufacturer has settled more than 90% of related civil claims, paying billions of dollars in compensation, and recently concluded three more settlements with other families of Ethiopian Airlines crash victims.

The ruling has become a significant signal for the aviation industry, underscoring manufacturers' responsibility for passenger safety and their strict adherence to standards.
