In the US, the search is ongoing for the killer of prominent right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Law enforcement has managed to find the weapon used to shoot Kirk, states Special Agent and head of the FBI Salt Lake City field office Robert Bohls and Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason, according to NBC News.

What is known about the shooter

Mason said that the shooter arrived on the campus of Utah Valley University at 11:52 a.m. local time. Authorities tracked his movements up the stairs and onto the roof, from where he fired the fatal shot.

After the shot, the shooter moved to the other side of the building, jumped off the roof, and disappeared into a nearby neighborhood.

Officers combed the area and interviewed witnesses, as well as residents with doorbell cameras, to gather new leads.

"We do have good video footage of this individual. We are not going to release that at this time. We are working through some technologies and some ways to identify this individual," Mason said.

He added that if the shooter is not found, law enforcement will turn to the media and release the video to identify him.

Officials also stated that the shooter appeared to be a college student, but no other details about him are currently available.

Weapon used

Boles noted that the shooter likely used a high-powered bolt-action rifle.

"That rifle was recovered in a wooded area where the shooter had fled," the FBI special agent said.

The weapon is planned to be analyzed at an FBI laboratory.

Investigators also collected a "footwear impression, a palm print and forearm imprints for analysis," he added.

Authorities have already received over 130 tips with potential details about the incident.

"I assure you that all leads and tips are being fully investigated," Bohls said.
