Cardiologist names 3 popular ways to lower blood pressure and whether they really work
High blood pressure can be a complex condition that is difficult to normalize. The Mirror named common home remedies and whether they really help.
Glasses of lemon juice on an empty stomach
Cardiologist Max Fritschka named three home remedies that actually have some scientific support. But he emphasized that when blood pressure reaches a certain level, medical intervention is required, and you shouldn't just rely on home remedies.
One such home remedy is a glass of lemon juice on an empty stomach. It is usually recommended as an easy way to “start” your metabolism and help you lose weight.
Lemons are rich in vitamin C, and studies have shown that this vitamin can be quite effective in treating high blood pressure on its own.
A 2012 study suggests that taking 500 mg of vitamin C daily for eight weeks can reduce blood pressure by 4.85 mm Hg.
“However, the short-term effect of lemons on high blood pressure could not be proven,” the doctor noted.
Does mint tea lower blood pressure
In addition, there are claims that mint tea reduces high blood pressure due to the properties of menthol in its leaves to dilate blood vessels. However, the expert denied this theory.
He explained that the level of menthol in the drink is too low to have any strong effect on the body.
Peppermint essential oil
However, peppermint essential oil is more effective, as it can lower blood pressure.
In addition, to reduce headaches, peppermint oil is rubbed into the temples and back of the head. The oil reduces dizziness and weakens the symptoms of seasickness.
However, the cardiologist warned that these home remedies cannot replace blood pressure medications prescribed by a doctor.
It is important to know that hydration and exercise also have a certain impact on blood pressure.
“Yoga or meditation can help lower blood pressure in the short term by using deep breathing techniques, among other things. Stress reduction and physical activity or exercise are considered extremely beneficial for high blood pressure,” the cardiologist added.
