Ukrainian senior iOS and macOS platform engineer Ihor Malovanyi has introduced an original app called BackTrack. The application functions as a continuous audio and video recorder, allowing users to save an important moment after it has already happened, according to the developer’s LinkedIn post.

How does the technology work?

The concept behind BackTrack is that the app constantly runs in the background, recording everything happening around the user. There is no need to predict an interesting moment in advance or keep the camera permanently turned on.

When something worth saving happens, the user only needs to perform one simple action:

  • press the Cut button on the iPhone screen or on an Apple Watch;
  • say the command “Cut” out loud;
  • clap hands.

The app then instantly cuts and saves a video or audio segment of a preset duration directly to the gallery.

From piano improvisations to car rides

According to Ihor Malovanyi, the idea for such a tool came from his own everyday needs. The first inspiration was playing the piano — during musical improvisations, successful melodies were often forgotten because there was no recorder running at the right moment to capture them.

The second use case emerged during squash games with friends, where the most spectacular and emotional moments always remained off-camera. The third application area the developer sees is security — the app can fully function as a continuous dashcam recorder in a car.

Plans and project development

The developer admits that the project is still in the process of finding a clear positioning, since musicians, athletes, and drivers are three completely different target audiences with their own specific needs.

In the near future, Malovanyi plans to fully build his portfolio of mobile applications and also bring in App Store Optimization (ASO) and marketing specialists to help expand BackTrack to a wider market.

The app is available for download on the App Store.
