Canada reacts to Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum

Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne, stated that the US tariffs on steel and aluminum will be unjustified. He warned that Canada's response to this measure would be clear and measured, reports CNN.
Champagne emphasized that, according to the US Department of the Treasury, Canada is the largest source of both materials for the US.
"Canadian steel and aluminum support key industries in the US from defense, shipbuilding, energy to automotive," he said.
He also added that Canada would consult with its international partners and review the details of the tariffs.
Furthermore, Chrystia Freeland, the former Canadian finance minister and now a candidate for prime minister to replace Justin Trudeau, called the tariffs illegal and unjustified.
"Given that Donald Trump has decided to proceed with tariffs against our steel and aluminum industries and workers, we must do what we did the first time he tried: retaliate dollar for dollar," she stated.
Freeland also urged for negotiations with other affected countries to push back against US President Donald Trump's actions.
