Canada has prepared an immediate response in case US President Donald Trump imposes a 25% tariff. Ottawa won't remain passive, stated Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to Newsweek.

"If the president does choose to implement any tariffs against Canada, we're ready with a response – a purposeful, forceful but reasonable, immediate response," the Canadian leader stated.

Trudeau explained that the Canadian government is reacting to Trump’s claims that Canada had failed to stop the flow of fentanyl (a narcotic substance - ed.) into the US.

"Our border is safe and secure. Right now, we're showing the new American administration that they have a strong partner in Canada when it comes to upholding border security, all while simultaneously underscoring that we won't back down, that if tariffs are implemented against Canada, we will respond," he added.

He reassured that retaliatory measures would remain in place until the 25% tariff is lifted.

Trudeau also warned that Canadians could face "difficult times" in the coming weeks if the tariffs go into effect.

Trump's threats

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose a 25% duty on imports from Canada and Mexico starting February 1.

He explained his decision by saying that illegal migrants and drugs were entering the US through Canada and Mexico.
