People looking to lose weight often wonder if it’s possible to shed pounds without exercising. Trainer Viktor Mandziak explained whether it's possible or not.

Is it possible to lose weight without exercising?

According to the expert, diet is about reducing body mass, while exercise is about improving its quality.

He explained that physical exercises, especially strength training, prevent the body from compensating for calorie deficits at the expense of muscle mass, forcing it to break down fat in problem areas instead.

"And if you are patient, you will become not only strong and enduring but, with the loss of excess fat, you will also see the aesthetic appeal of your developed musculoskeletal system," Viktor says.

If you’re only interested in the numbers on the scale, you can lose weight without exercising, but it will be more challenging.

Mandziak cited an experiment involving women with obesity. One group followed a diet, while the other combined the diet with exercise. Both groups maintained a calorie deficit, with the first group consuming 800 fewer calories, and the second group consuming 450 fewer calories while burning an additional 350 calories through exercise. Both groups lost weight, but the group that did not exercise felt hungrier.

"If part of the calorie deficit is created through exercise and daily activities, the hunger is not as pronounced," the expert says.

The trainer also emphasizes that your diet for weight loss should include enough protein, fiber, and plenty of low-calorie foods. Also, you should get enough sleep to avoid feeling hungry.
