The question of whether to drink water with meals remains a topic of debate, even among those who prioritize their health. Some believe that drinking water during lunch or dinner "dilutes stomach acid" and disrupts digestion, while others argue that this is just a myth and that you should drink whenever you feel thirsty.

Can you drink water while eating

Most modern gastroenterologists agree that moderate water consumption during meals does not harm digestion. On the contrary, it can actually help. Water moistens food, makes it easier to swallow, and aids in the initial stages of digestion in the stomach.

Studies show that water doesn't dilute stomach acid enough to affect the digestive process. The stomach quickly responds to changes and adjusts acid production according to the amount of liquid consumed.

However, doctors caution against washing down every bite with large gulps of water, as this may cause a feeling of heaviness, especially if the food is fatty or hot. Ideally, take a few small sips during or right after your meal.

When it's best to drink water

The best time to drink water is 20-30 minutes before a meal, as it helps the body prepare for eating, stimulates enzyme production, and can even reduce overeating.

After eating, doctors recommend avoiding large amounts of liquid for 30-40 minutes to prevent putting extra strain on the stomach. Still, a small sip of warm water after a hearty meal can help ease digestion.

For those with gastritis or heartburn, maintaining proper hydration habits is especially important—drinking cold or carbonated water immediately after a meal can intensify discomfort.

How water affects nutrient absorption

According to research, water plays a key role in all stages of digestion. It helps transport nutrients, supports normal bowel function, and prevents constipation. Sufficient hydration improves the absorption of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

If the body is dehydrated, digestion slows down, leading to bloating and heaviness. That's why doctors don't recommend limiting your water intake. The main thing is that it should be clean, still, and not cold.
