Germany has once again started talking about the possibility of transferring long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. This time, the initiative was taken by the Free Democratic Party of Germany (FDP), Tagesschau reports.

According to the media, Christian Dürr, the leader of the FDP parliamentary group, once again called for Ukraine to be provided with Taurus long-range cruise missiles. In his opinion, the delay in the transfer of weapons to Ukraine may be an indulgence to the Russian narrative that anyone supplying long-range weapons systems could provoke a nuclear war in Europe.

The FDP has submitted a formal proposal to the Bundestag advocating for the transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine. However, it is likely that neither the Social Democratic Party of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz nor the opposition Christian Democratic Union will vote for this proposal.

Ukraine seeks to receive long-range Taurus missiles from Germany

Ukraine is actively calling on Germany to transfer long-range Taurus cruise missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 500 kilometers. This weapon could be decisive for striking the rear positions of the Russian army, logistics hubs and important infrastructure in the occupied regions. The Taurus missiles are equipped with high-precision guidance systems and have a powerful warhead, making them an effective tool for offensive operations and the destruction of key links in the enemy's military logistics.

However, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz refrains from deciding to transfer these weapons to Ukraine. His main argument is the fear that Taurus missiles could be used to strike Russian territory. Scholz believes that this could escalate the war and cause unpredictable consequences. At the same time, Germany also takes into account the risks of getting involved in a direct confrontation with Russia, trying to avoid an escalation of the war.

Nevertheless, support for the idea of transferring these missiles to Ukraine is growing in the Bundestag and among Germany's allies. Proponents emphasize that Taurus missiles are needed to protect Ukrainian territory, and their use can be limited by programmatic or contractual guarantees to exclude the possibility of attacks on Russia. The issue remains open and depends on domestic political discussions in Germany and pressure from international partners.
