Russian forces launched a strike on the city of Sumy late on July 21, resulting in significant damage and injuries, according to Oleh Hryhorov, head of Sumy Regional Military Administration.

The Russian strike hit a residential area of the city, damaging five apartment buildings, a shopping mall, and 18 vehicles.

"Two residents of one of the most heavily damaged buildings, a 60-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, were taken to a medical facility. They are being examined and receiving medical care," the statement said.

Hryhorov added that many residents of the neighborhood were left in shock following the attack. Preliminary reports indicate that 12 people have sought medical assistance.

"Medical teams, psychologists, and emergency services are working at the site. All necessary help is being provided to the victims," he concluded.

This update followed an earlier post in which Hryhorov reported that, at around 10:30 PM Kyiv time, Russian forces had struck the Kovpakivskyi district of the Sumy community.

Sumy under attack

Earlier in the evening, social media users reported hearing explosions in Sumy. Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar later confirmed the information, stating that the blasts were likely caused by guided aerial bombs hitting one of the city’s districts.

Kobzar confirmed that a multi-story residential building was damaged in the strike, with windows shattered and balconies destroyed.

He later added that an emergency response center would be set up at Kindergarten No. 22 starting at 8 a.m. to coordinate recovery efforts.
