British PM wants to ensure Ukraine in the strongest possible position before Trump takes office
Ukraine needs to be in the strongest possible position before US President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Britain remains the leader, said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“It’s very important we ensure that Ukraine is in the strongest possible position. That’s something I’ve been arguing for since I was prime minister,” he said during a visit to a hospital in Kyiv.
Starmer said that this was his seventh meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“I’m here at the burns unit of one of the Kyiv hospitals, which is a grim reminder of the heavy price Ukraine is paying. So we must give the necessary support, and that’s what I’m discussing with President Zelenskyy today,” the British Prime Minister said.
Starmer said that this is exactly what he is discussing with President Zelenskyy today. “We must never let up on that and we’ve been leading the way,” he added.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is visiting Kyiv on January 16. The purpose of the visit is to sign an agreement on a 100-year partnership with Ukraine. The agreement will be based on 9 main pillars.
US President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to reduce support for Ukraine. In addition, he wants to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine. According to Bloomberg, Ukraine's European allies are cautiously optimistic about Trump's plans, expecting that he will not force Kyiv to enter into premature negotiations with Russia.
