Britain imposes sanctions on Russian military for using chemical weapons in Ukraine
The UK has imposed sanctions on Russia’s Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense Troops and their leader, Igor Kirillov, specifically for the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine, according to the British government.
Russian forces admitted to using chloropicrin, a toxic substance first used during World War I. This violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention constitutes a serious breach of international law.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that London will not remain idle in the face of such violations and will continue to impose sanctions on the regime of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
According to him, Russia continues to employ inhumane methods, and London will not allow it to evade responsibility.
Defense Secretary John Healey emphasized that the UK is committed to punishing violations of international law and will support Ukraine for as long as necessary.
The UK also imposed sanctions on two Russian laboratories involved in the development of chemical weapons and promised to continue military and financial support for Ukraine, including annual aid of £3 billion.
Russia's use of chemical weapons
Earlier, the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense reported the possible use of chemical weapons by Russian occupiers in the temporarily occupied territories of the Zaporizhzhia region.
There were also reports of chemical weapons being used by Russian troops on the Bakhmut front.
