Britain and Italy to discuss Ukraine's Storm Shadow strikes on Russia
On Monday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will meet with Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. They will discuss Ukraine's use of Storm Shadow missiles on Russian territory, reports Bloomberg.
According to the newspaper's sources, the parties will discuss Ukraine's proposal to use the British long-range cruise missiles Storm Shadow in Russia.
The two leaders are also expected to say that they have discussed the hybrid threats posed by Russia to Europe and reiterate their support for Ukraine's recovery.
Bloomberg notes that Starmer's visit to Rome came a few days after he met with US President Joe Biden in Washington. In particular, they discussed whether to allow Ukraine to launch long-range strikes on Russian territory using Storm Shadow missiles guided by US navigation data. The publication added that Biden has so far resisted such a move because of fears that it could lead to an escalation of the war.
According to informed sources, the British authorities will hold talks on this plan with their French and German counterparts in the coming days.
Earlier on Sunday, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that talks with the United States and other allies on the proposal were continuing, adding that further discussions between the allies and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would take place at the UN this month.
“It’s important that as allies supporting Ukraine, we have a shared strategy to win going forward,” Lammy told the BBC.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg added that, in addition to the above, on Monday, Starmer and Maloney will discuss plans to combat migration, as well as efforts to further strengthen ties between the two countries.
Today, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with CNN journalist Fareed Zakaria that Ukraine has not yet received permission from the United States to strike targets deep in Russia with American weapons.
