Borscht in New York: Prices and places to try the Ukrainian classic

Ukrainian borscht has long gone beyond Ukraine, especially thanks to the diaspora, which actively promotes Ukrainian culture abroad. Therefore, it is not surprising that even in distant New York you can still taste national Ukrainian dishes.
RBC-Ukraine has compiled a list of places in New York where Ukrainian borscht is served.
Veselka
The legendary Ukrainian restaurant, that was founded in 1954 by Ukrainian immigrants. Located in the East Village, it has become a symbol of Ukrainian cuisine in New York.
The menu includes classic borscht, varenyky (dumplings), deruny (potato pancakes), and other traditional dishes. The restaurant is known for its support of Ukraine and active participation in charitable initiatives. In 2023, it opened a new location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Streecha
This is a small basement place located under a chiropractic clinic in the East Village. They serve homemade borscht, varenyky, and other Ukrainian dishes at affordable prices.
The place is run by volunteers. Inside, there is an authentic atmosphere reminiscent of a home kitchen.

Ukrainian East Village Restaurant
This restaurant offers a variety of Ukrainian dishes, including borscht, varenyky, and holubtsi (stuffed cabbage rolls). Located in the heart of the East Village, it is known for its hospitality and traditional cuisine.
