Borrell reveals updated EU plan on training Ukrainian army
The member states of the European Union agreed to train about 20,000 more Ukrainian servicemen, says the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, during a press conference after the meeting of EU defense ministers.
"We have almost reached the target of 40,000 Ukrainian soldiers trained through our training mission in Ukraine. Today, we have agreed to add an additional 20,000 soldiers, and this will put the bar at 60,000 soldiers trained in total," stated Borrell.
According to him, this number of 60,000 will be reached by the end of summer.
Ukrainian military training in Europe
As mentioned above, to date, about 40,000 Ukrainian military personnel have already undergone training in European countries as part of the EUMAM mission. Such a decision was made by the ministers of foreign affairs of the participating countries in November 2022.
Initially, it was about the number of up to 15 thousand soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for training in Germany, Poland, and other EU countries. Later, the goal was increased to 30,000, and then to 40,000.
Meanwhile, Germany decided to conduct training for another 10,000 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
