Germany to train another 10,000 Ukrainian military personnel in 2024
Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defence Siemtje Möller says that this year, like last one, the Bundeswehr plans to train another 10,000 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The training will take place within the framework of the European Union Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM).
On Wednesday, January 31, in Brussels, a German official emphasized Germany's understanding that it remains firmly committed to supporting Ukraine as it repels Russia's large-scale military aggression.
Ukrainian military training in Europe
To date, about 40,000 Ukrainian troops have already been trained in Europe as part of the EUMAM mission. This decision was made by the foreign ministers of the participating countries in November 2022.
Initially, the goal was to send up to 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers to train in Germany, Poland, and other EU countries. Later, the goal was increased to 30,000, and then to 40,000. The Bundeswehr has already trained about 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
Training missions in Germany
The German Bundeswehr trains Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers, in particular, on the Patriot air defense system, Panzerhaubitze2000 self-propelled howitzer, Marder infantry fighting vehicle, and Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 main battle tanks. There are also training courses for military leadership and the medical sector.
According to the German Defense Ministry, an average of about 1,500 members of the Bundeswehr have recently participated in the mission.
Germany's assistance to Ukraine
As a reminder, Germany has become one of the countries that have been helping Ukraine with military, political, and financial support since Russia's full-scale invasion. Berlin has provided several types of artillery, Leopard tanks of old and new modifications, IRIS-T and Patriot air defense systems, ammunition, vehicles, drones, and other weapons.
Earlier, Germany announced that in 2024 it would double its military aid to Ukraine to 8 billion euros.
Today, January 31, the German government announced that the country had handed over a new military aid package to Ukraine. It includes air defense missiles, all-terrain vehicles, and armored personnel carriers.
