Blinken asks Iraqi Prime Minister to prevent weapons traffic to Syria
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani. He asked to prevent the flow of Iranian weapons to Syria, Bloomberg reports.
Blinken, who has been visiting the region in recent days, made a brief stop in Iraq.
During his meeting with the Iranian prime minister, he emphasized that Syria remains unstable, and Washington wants Iraq to prevent any weapons from entering the country, where they could be used by Iranian-backed militant groups or otherwise further destabilize the situation in the country.
According to the media outlet, Blinken also asked al-Sudani to step up the fight against Iranian-backed Shiite militia groups in Iraq, which have occasionally attacked US troops stationed in the country.
Blinken's visit to the Middle East
Recently it became known that Blinken and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan would fly to the Middle East because of the events in Syria.
Yesterday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Iraq for a visit.
Last week, rebels overthrew the dictatorial regime of Bashar al-Assad, who had ruled Syria for more than 20 years.
