Biohacking vs. everyday care: What really helps slow down aging

After age 30, the body may start responding differently to familiar demands: lack of sleep can become harder to tolerate, the skin may take longer to recover, and maintaining physical fitness can sometimes become more difficult. At the same time, 30 is not a strict biological milestone after which a person suddenly begins to age rapidly.
Olha But, PhD in Medicine and head of AM System, spoke exclusively to RBC-Ukraine about what happens to the body after 30 and how to support its resilience.
Why the body may respond differently after 30
According to the doctor, this is when some people begin to notice the first signs of age-related changes. In particular, after stress or several nights of insufficient sleep, the skin may need more time to recover.
As we age, the ratio of muscle to fat tissue also gradually changes. If physical activity decreases, maintaining the same level of fitness can become more difficult.
Another change people may notice is fluctuations in energy levels. Persistent sleep deprivation, high stress levels, and insufficient physical activity can affect how you feel regardless of age.
Are supplements and anti-aging treatments necessary?
The desire to stay young often prompts people to experiment with their health. Popular practices include taking dietary supplements, so-called "youth IV drips," detox programs, and juice diets.
The expert advises against using such methods without considering an individual's health status. She says dietary supplements may be appropriate when there are specific indications, but uncontrolled use or excessive intake of certain substances can have unwanted effects.
So-called detox programs also require caution. For healthy people, there is not enough scientific evidence to conclude that juice diets or specialized programs help "flush toxins" from the body. Some restrictive approaches, on the contrary, may create additional health risks.

Don't rely solely on cosmetic treatments
It is also important not to rely solely on cosmetic procedures. They may improve the appearance of the skin, but they cannot replace adequate sleep, physical activity, a balanced diet, and preventive health monitoring.
"Rejuvenation doesn't begin with medications or procedures. It begins with understanding what is happening in your body right now," says Olha But.
5 steps to support your health
Preserve muscle mass, rather than focusing only on weight control. One of the most important anti-aging strategies is regular physical activity, particularly strength training.
Muscle tissue plays a major role in determining physical endurance, metabolic rate, and the body's functional capacity.
Give your body the nutrients it needs. The foundation of your diet should include quality sources of protein, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, fiber, and sufficient micronutrients.
Don't wait for symptoms before getting your health checked. Many changes in the body can remain unnoticed for a long time without causing any symptoms. That's why preventive health screenings should be performed regularly.
Control the factors that affect healthy aging. Adequate physical activity, sufficient sleep, a balanced diet, quitting smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, and managing chronic conditions have a much greater impact on healthy longevity than most popular anti-aging practices.
Personalize your approach. One of the biggest mistakes is trying to follow popular protocols or recommendations without taking your individual characteristics into account.
