Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and a billionaire, has a very complex condition. His daughter, 22-year-old Phoebe Gates, spoke about it during the popular podcast Call Her Daddy, reports The Sun.

What is Bill Gates’ diagnosis?

During the podcast conversation, Phoebe Gates accidentally let it slip that her billionaire father has Asperger’s syndrome. It’s worth noting that the Microsoft co-founder has never publicly confirmed this diagnosis, though he has at times hinted at traits associated with the autism spectrum.

My dad is pretty socially awkward. He’s said he, you know, has Asperger’s, Phoebe said while describing how difficult it is to bring boyfriends home.

Bringing a guy home is terrifying for the guy. It’s also kind of hilarious for me. So uncomfortable but so funny, Bill Gates’ daughter added.

In 2023, the billionaire wrote in his memoir "Source Code": I probably would’ve been diagnosed today, and that’s not a bad thing — it’s part of who I am. I was a hyper-focused kid. I would get so lost in what I was doing, I’d forget to eat.

In another interview, Bill Gates admitted that he felt different while growing up.

I always knew I was different in ways that confused people in terms of my energy level and intensity, and going off and just studying things. It’s a little confusing when you’re a kid, that you’re different, or people react to you in some ways, or your social skills — you’re miscuing on various things, he said.

What is Asperger’s syndrome?

Asperger’s syndrome is part of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates and interacts with others.

People with this syndrome tend to have average or above-average intelligence and strong verbal skills, but may struggle with social cues, body language, and forming relationships. They often develop a deep interest in specific topics and prefer routines or predictable environments.

Individuals with this syndrome typically do not have delays in language or cognitive development, but they may engage in repetitive behaviors and have difficulty coping with change.

Most commonly, people with Asperger’s experience communication difficulties, stereotypical behaviors, and limited interests. While they may also have co-occurring conditions within the autism spectrum, Asperger’s is significantly different from classic autism.

The syndrome is congenital, and upbringing and environment can strongly influence its expression. Each child may show symptoms of Asperger’s in different ways, and each person may have a unique set of characteristics.

Most common manifestations:

  • Difficulty understanding nonverbal cues
  • Problems initiating and ending conversations
  • Use of complex vocabulary without understanding its meaning
  • Little understanding of humor or sarcasm, taking things literally
  • Difficulty predicting events
  • Misinterpreting others’ thoughts and feelings
  • Often restricted and repetitive thinking
  • Need for structure and order
  • Strong interest in specific topics
  • Sensitivity to sensory stimuli

In adults, signs may include:

  • Individual perception of reality
  • Low emotional expression and intensity
  • High level of self-sufficiency
  • Unusual tolerance for uncertainty

Among co-occurring conditions often seen in adults with Asperger’s:

  • Emotional and motivational disorders
  • Motor and sensory function disorders
  • Impaired social skills
  • Stereotypies and obsessive tendencies
  • Unique behavioral and cognitive features
