Biden to meet with Erdogan as Israel's war with Hamas continues
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to meet with US President Joe Biden at the White House on May 9, according to Bloomberg.
Bloomberg received information about the meeting from its own sources familiar with the matter.
A few days ago, on April 20, Erdogan held a meeting in Istanbul with the political leader of the Hamas group, Ismail Haniyeh. The parties discussed a potential permanent ceasefire and accelerated humanitarian aid to Gaza. Unlike the US and the EU, Türkiye does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization.
Türkiye's stance on the Gaza conflict
In response to the terrorist attack by Hamas militants on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of over a thousand Israelis, the IDF launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip.
The President of Türkiye condemned Israel, stating that he would present this country to the world as a "war criminal" and "occupier." Tel Aviv recalled its diplomats from Türkiye.
Later, Erdogan stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the leadership of the country bear sole responsibility for the situation in the Middle East.
Today, Egypt has resumed talks on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and has requested the next meeting with Israel.
