Biden and Stoltenberg to discuss support for Ukraine
US President Joe Biden will meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday, June 12, to discuss various issues, including Ukraine, told White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Jean-Pierre mentioned that the main focus of Biden's meeting with Stoltenberg will be the upcoming NATO summit scheduled for July 11-12 in Vilnius.
They "will review preparations for the summit, including the work to further strengthen allied deterrence and defense, build on the 2014 Wales Summit Defense Investment Pledge, and deepen NATO’s partnership," said the Press Secretary.
She added that Biden and Stoltenberg will also discuss support for Ukraine "in the face of Russia’s brutal war of aggression".
Ukraine's expectations from the NATO Summit
It is worth noting that Ukrainian officials have already expressed several times the support they expect to receive from allies at the NATO summit. In particular, Ukraine wants the Alliance to provide initial agreements on security guarantees.
Ukrainian officials have also mentioned that they are awaiting more specific promises regarding membership in the North Atlantic Alliance since Ukraine is currently applying and implementing NATO standards.
In this regard, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that he would not participate in the NATO summit if there are no security guarantees or specific details regarding Ukraine's membership.
