Biden's team rejects possibility of returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine
The current administration of US President Joe Biden rejects the possibility that Ukraine could obtain nuclear weapons. It will focus on the transfer of conventional weapons, states the National Security Adviser to the President of the United States, Jake Sullivan.
He denied reports in some Western media that the Biden administration is allegedly open to returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine.
“That is not under consideration. No. What we are doing is surging various conventional capacities to Ukraine so that they can effectively defend themselves and take the fight to the Russians, not nuclear capability,” Sullivan said.
According to him, the White House will do everything in its power to provide Ukraine with all the tools to strengthen its capabilities on the battlefield within 50 days.
“President Biden directed me to oversee a massive surge in the military equipment that we are delivering to Ukraine so that we have spent every dollar that Congress has appropriated to us by the time that President Biden leaves office,” the adviser added.
What is known about the topic of nuclear weapons for Ukraine
Earlier, The New York Times reported, citing sources, that after Donald Trump's victory in the US election, the current administration could allegedly return nuclear weapons to Ukraine, which it had given up under security guarantees.
“That would be an instant and enormous deterrent. But such a step would be complicated and have serious implications,” the NYT wrote.
As expected, such news caused outrage in the Kremlin. According to Putin's spokesperson Dmitriy Peskov, those who make such statements do not feel “a shred of responsibility.”
In November, The Times wrote that Ukraine could allegedly build a nuclear bomb in a few months if the United States cut aid. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kyiv is not developing and is not going to create such a weapon.
