Biden's request to be next goal after temporary budget, Senate Democratic leader says
The passage of the National Security package, which includes new funding for Ukraine, will be the next goal for the Senate following the temporary budget, states the leader of the Democrats in the U.S. Senate, Chuck Schumer, on X.
He announces that today, on January 18, the Senate will pass a temporary budget to prevent a government shutdown - the cessation of the U.S. government's operations due to the budget not being passed within the designated timeframe.
"Once Congress avoids a shutdown, it is my goal for the Senate to move forward to the national security supplemental as soon as possible. Our national security, our friends abroad, and the future of democracy demands nothing less," Schumer notes.
Biden's request
A few months ago, U.S. President Joe Biden asked Congress to allocate over $100 billion for national security needs. Approximately $60 billion of these funds were intended for new assistance funding for Ukraine.
However, such a package did not garner support in Congress, facing opposition from Republicans. They demanded that the White House include stricter measures in its proposal regarding border security against migrants.
For over a month, negotiations have been ongoing between Republicans and Democrats to reach a compromise on border-related issues.
Yesterday, President Joe Biden invited leaders of both Democrats and Republicans in the House of Representatives and the Senate to discuss his initiative.
Today, reports emerged in the media that the president has agreed to strengthen immigration policy, as demanded by Republicans.
