Biden responds to killing of Hamas leader
The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh will not contribute to ceasefire negotiations, according to the US President.
In response to journalists' questions about whether Haniyeh's assassination had ruined the chances of reaching a ceasefire agreement, Biden replied: "It doesn't help".
Biden also added that he held talks on Thursday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Reuters notes that Israel has not claimed responsibility for the killing of Haniyeh, but it has claimed to have launched devastating strikes against Iran's proxies, including Hamas and Lebanon's Hezbollah. Specifically, it has promised to respond harshly to any attack.
The killing of the Hamas leader
Haniyeh, who led Hamas's political office in Qatar, was killed during his visit to Tehran. At the time, he was attending the inauguration of Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Hamas immediately blamed Israel for the killing; however, Tel Aviv did not confirm its involvement in Haniyeh's assassination.
As reported by The New York Times, the Hamas leader was killed in a guest house due to a bomb explosion.
