Biden may drop out of presidential race as early as this weekend - Axios

Several high-ranking Democrats told Axios that Biden might decide to withdraw his candidacy. According to them, the growing pressure from party leaders in Congress and his close friends will convince the current US President.

Moreover, Axios, citing sources among Democrats, notes that Biden, who had to go into self-isolation due to a diagnosed case of COVID-19, has accepted the pressure and poor polls, which makes "it impossible to continue his campaign".

Thus, the highest leaders of his party, his friends, and key donors believe that he cannot win, and if he stays in the race, Donald Trump might win convincingly and destroy his legacy and the hopes of the Democrats.

"His choice is to be one of history's heroes, or to be sure of the fact that there'll never be a Biden presidential library. I pray that he does the right thing. He's headed that way," one of the President's close friends told Axios.

Biden and the US presidential elections

The US will hold its presidential elections this November. Incumbent President Joe Biden has decided to run for a second term and compete against former President Donald Trump, who is the Republican Party's candidate.

However, the first televised debate between the candidates was disastrous for Biden. The 81-year-old President appeared tired, while his 78-year-old opponent seemed more energetic. Following this, there were widespread calls for Biden to withdraw from the race and make way for another Democratic candidate.

So far, Biden has refused to drop out of the race, asserting that he is capable of winning and that only Lord or poor polling results proving his re-election chances are nonexistent could make him drop out. Recently, he mentioned that he might withdraw his candidacy due to health problems.

Meanwhile, Associated Press has published poll results showing that two-thirds of Democrats want Biden to withdraw from the US presidential race.
