Biden calls on US Congress to approve $24 billion for Ukraine
The current US President, Joe Biden, has appealed to Congress to allocate an additional $24 billion to Ukraine. In particular, to increase military support, according to the New York Post and Politico.Pro.
According to a request received by the second aforementioned agency, the White House Office of Management and Budget suggested that Congress could include this assistance in a package of decisions to avoid the risk of ending support when the presidential administration changes.
Several lawmakers reviewed the proposal on Monday. It stipulates that out of the aforementioned $24 billion, $8 billion would go to the initiative to provide security assistance to Ukraine, in particular, to finance contracts of American companies to supply weapons to Ukraine. The other 16 billion is to be used to replenish the US arms stockpile.
However, some Republicans have already expressed outrage over the announcement of the request. For example, Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah.
“Joe Biden just gave away 4.7 billion in your taxpayer dollars by unilaterally “forgiving” loans to Ukraine. Congress must not give him a free gift to further sabotage President Trump’s peace negotiations on the way out the door. Any Biden funding demands should be DOA,” he wrote on X.
Biden's determination for Ukraine
Bloomberg recently reported that in the last months of his administration, Biden has been seeking to strengthen Ukraine's position against Russia. This is because US President-elect Donald Trump promised to quickly end the war after coming to the White House on January 20.
Among these decisions are permission to use ATACMS missiles on Russian territory, anti-personnel mines, and debt relief. At the same time, the agency's sources say that these decisions can help Trump. In particular, they will put him in a better position to end the war, and Ukraine in a better position for any negotiations.
We also wrote that the Biden administration considered publicly calling for an official invitation to Ukraine to join NATO. But in the end, it decided not to do so.
