Biden and Scholz discussed further support for Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during his visit to Washington, discussed further support for Ukraine with U.S. President Joe Biden, according to the White House press service and the German Chancellor on X.
"President Biden and Chancellor Scholz reaffirmed their resolute support for Ukraine in its struggle against Russia’s war of aggression. The President commended Germany’s exemplary contributions to Ukraine’s self-defense, and Chancellor Scholz emphasized the significance of sustained U.S. support," the White House press service stated.
Scholz also expressed confidence that the U.S. Congress would provide financial assistance to Ukraine.
The politicians also discussed efforts to prevent regional escalation in the Middle East and reaffirmed their commitment to Israel's right to self-defense under international law. They also emphasized the need to protect the civilian population in the Gaza Strip and increase the supply of essential humanitarian aid.
Assistance from Germany and the United States to Ukraine
The United States is a crucial partner for Ukraine, providing multifaceted military and material support from the early days of Russia's full-scale invasion. However, it recently became known that the U.S. has run out of funds allocated for aid to Ukraine. Due to disagreements between Democrats and Republicans regarding border protection, the aid package has not received support from the U.S. Congress. Currently, assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan is being considered separately in the Senate, independent of border-related issues.
Germany is also one of Ukraine's key allies since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion. On January 31, Germany delivered a new package of military aid to Ukraine, including anti-aircraft missiles, all-terrain vehicles, and armored personnel carriers.
In addition, the Minister of Health of Germany, Karl Lauterbach, assured Ukraine of ongoing assistance and collaboration in the field of healthcare.
