The head of the CEC of Belarus, Igor Karpenko, said that 86.82% of voters had voted for self-proclaimed head of state Aleksandr Lukashenko in the “election”. But this is preliminary information, reports Belta.
According to preliminary data, each presidential candidate received the following number of votes:
- Oleg Gaidukevich – 2.02%;
- Anna Kanopatskaya – 1.86%;
- Aleksandr Lukashenko – 86.82%;
- Sergei Syrankov – 3.21%;
- Aleksandr Khizhnyak – 1.74%;
- None of the above – 3.60%.
The final press conference of the CEC on the preliminary results will be held today, January 27, at 11:00 am local time.
On January 26, Belarus held a presidential “election”, which became the seventh in his political career for Lukashenko. He has been ruling the country for over 30 years.
Meanwhile, the EU reacted, calling the election a sham.
“Today’s sham election in Belarus has been neither free nor fair. The people of Belarus deserve a real say in who governs their country,” said EU diplomat Kaja Kallas.
Lukashenko claimed he did not want to run in the election, but was persuaded, as "he has no replacement."
