Belarus starts military training near Lithuania and Poland borders: details
Belarus began military exercises near the borders of Lithuania and Poland on Monday, August 7. The training is being conducted at the Belarusian training ground "Hožský" and in the Grodno region, which is located near the borders with Poland and Lithuania and the Suwałki Corridor, according to the monitoring group "Belarus Golovny."
"Today, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus announced the start of command and staff exercises with the 6th Mechanized Brigade of the Belarusian Armed Forces (Unit 05733, stationed in Grodno). It was reported that the exercises would take place at the 'Hožský' training ground and in the areas of the Grodno region," the statement reads.
As clarified by the monitoring group, the Suwałki Corridor is a roughly 100 km-long land corridor that could connect Belarusian territory with Russia's Kaliningrad region.
In turn, the "Hožský" training ground is close to Lithuania and Poland's borders.
"The training ground was built in the 1950s. The 6th Mechanized Brigade (formerly the 6th Tank Division until 1992) has been stationed in Grodno since 1980. In other words, the military has been using the training ground for exercises for several decades," clarifies "Belarus Golovny."
The monitoring group assures that "there is no connection between the exercises with the 6th Mechanized Brigade and any potential threat to the Suwałki Corridor."
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus stated that unit management issues during combat operations will be practiced during the exercises.
"During preparation, the drones and close cooperation between tank and motorized infantry units with units from other branches of the military has been actively used," the statement further explains.
