Belarus deploys more troops near Ukraine's border: Is there risk of breakthrough?

Demchenko said Ukraine continues to monitor Belarusian military activity and assess the risks associated with it.

According to him, Minsk has been increasing its military presence near the Ukrainian border, but the forces deployed there do not currently pose a direct threat.

The State Border Guard Service also noted that since 2022, the Belarusian authorities have used claims of an alleged threat from Ukraine to justify strengthening their military capabilities and deploying new units.

"We should not expect this to create a threat to our country at this point," Demchenko said.

Belarus forms new brigade

It was previously reported that a new air assault brigade is being formed about 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

At the same time, military analyst Ivan Tymochko said available intelligence is not yet sufficient to fully assess the potential threat.

He stressed the need to determine whether the decision to create the unit was an independent initiative by the Belarusian leadership or linked to Russia, as well as to establish its personnel strength and weaponry.

According to Tymochko, the new formation could potentially be used not only as a Belarusian unit but also as cover for Russian forces. Ukrainian intelligence agencies and security services are therefore continuing to assess its purpose and actual capabilities.

Belarus has begun forming a new air assault formation near the border with Ukraine. One battalion has already been established, and plans called for the creation of another battalion within a year, along with artillery, air defense, reconnaissance, and combat support units.
