Beauty injections may be dangerous as doctors name main risk

Ukrainians frequently seek cosmetic procedures from specialists working from home. Yet the greatest threat during such treatments is a reaction to anesthesia rather than bruising or swelling, Ukrainian dermatologist Olha Tarnavska and plastic surgeon Dmytro Slosser explain.
Biggest dangers in cosmetologist office
"The scariest thing in a cosmetologist's office is not a bruise, but anaphylactic shock. An allergy to lidocaine can develop in minutes. A clinic has an anti-shock kit and doctors who know how to use it. A "home" practitioner in such a situation often just calls an ambulance, losing precious time," explained Olha Tarnavska.
According to her, critical conditions—such as a sharp drop in blood pressure, breathing difficulties, or heart rhythm disturbances—require immediate reaction and special equipment. Therefore, any injection procedures must be performed in a medical facility.
Surgeon Dmytro Slosser emphasizes that even minor intervention requires precise calculation of drug dosages. An error or exceeding the allowable amount of an anesthetic can lead to a toxic reaction.
"If a doctor lacks sufficient experience, serious complications are possible," he notes.
A separate risk is accidental injection of the drug into a vessel. This can lead to severe consequences, including tissue necrosis or systemic damage. In plastic surgery, the patient's condition is monitored by an anesthesiologist, who is responsible for vital signs during surgery.
According to Slosser, even procedures previously performed under local anesthesia are increasingly conducted under general anesthesia with a specialist involved. This allows for minimizing risks and a timely response to complications.
The problem arises when injection or surgical manipulations are performed without an anesthesiologist and proper control.
Experts warn: saving money or trusting 'home' practitioners can cost your health. Before any intervention, ensure the procedure takes place in a licensed medical facility fully equipped for emergency care.
