Ukraine discussed ballistic missile interceptors, early warning of Russian attacks and the restoration of Starlink with the US. The parties agreed to continue their contact, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to Zelenskyy, the conversation was substantive and focused on issues of practical importance to Ukraine. The president thanked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his willingness to help and his clear position.
"First, ballistic missile interceptors, which are needed to protect lives. Second, early warning of Russian ballistic missile attacks, which is vital. Third, the situation with Starlink/Starshield, which needs to be restored," the head of state wrote.
At the same time, Zelenskyy emphasized that discussions on defense needs were taking place alongside diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
"Of course, all of this comes against the backdrop of our diplomatic efforts to end this horrific war and the constant killing of people," he noted.
Following the contact, Zelenskyy and Rubio agreed to speak again soon to exchange the latest information.
The president thanked the US secretary of state for the constructive conversation, as well as everyone in the US who supports fair approaches.
Tensions in US-Ukraine relations
Tensions between Kyiv and Washington have escalated over Ukraine’s access to US intelligence, warnings about Russian ballistic missile attacks, and restrictions on the Starlink satellite communications system.
On the evening of October 12, Russia attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles, but Ukraine did not receive advance warning from its partners about the launches.
The situation repeated itself on October 13: Kyiv was again subjected to a ballistic missile attack without prior intelligence warnings from partners.
On October 14, the operation of the Starshield military package was restricted in Ukraine: terminals lost connectivity at speeds exceeding 160 km/h. Presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov, known as "Flash," said this had disrupted several important missions.
That same day, Elon Musk explained that restrictions on Starshield were determined by the US military, while the final decision rested with US President Donald Trump.
