The Azerbaijani army is actively modernizing and transitioning to NATO standards.
The Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated this during a meeting with a NATO delegation.
According to Aliyev, the Azerbaijani army is closely cooperating with the Turkish armed forces as part of its reform process.
In this context, he emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral relations between Baku and NATO.
The president also noted that Azerbaijan has achieved its main goal since gaining independence in the early 20th century, the restoration of its historical lands.
He added that the process of modernizing the Azerbaijani army will continue.
Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement
In early August, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a peace agreement in Washington, mediated by US President Donald Trump.
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan dates back to the collapse of the Soviet Union, when Nagorno-Karabakh effectively came under Yerevan’s control, leaving Baku without authority over the region.
In September 2023, Azerbaijan regained full control over Nagorno-Karabakh following what it called an "anti-terrorist operation." Before that, most of the region’s population consisted of ethnic Armenians, who fled en masse after the fighting ended.
Later, Prime Minister Pashinyan officially recognized Azerbaijan’s territory of 86,600 square kilometers, which includes Nagorno-Karabakh.
As a result, Armenia and Azerbaijan reached a ceasefire agreement.
