Despite constant warnings from doctors, the practice of taking multivitamins to improve hair, skin, and nails or supplements that supposedly enhance health remains popular among Ukrainians. However, there are certain substances that can have a reverse effect according to CNBC publication, that explains which supplements it's better to avoid.

Avoid buying supplements with biotin and collagen

Research indicates that many supplements for hair, skin, and nails contain far more biotin than our bodies need.

"Consuming too much biotin can alter test results that healthcare providers may order, like thyroid testing, cardiac testing [and] potentially even vitamin D testing," dermatologist Dr. Rebecca Hartman explains.

Getting biotin and collagen naturally through a balanced diet is a much better and safer way to obtain these vitamins. Experts recommend consuming foods high in biotin and collagen, such as beans, dairy products, and egg yolks.

Magnesium supplements won't improve sleep

According to clinical psychologist Shelby Harris, magnesium supplements won't help you sleep if you don't have a magnesium deficiency or if you are not lacking it in sufficient quantities.

Excessive magnesium can negatively impact health and cause side effects such as heart rhythm disturbances or kidney problems. Instead of taking magnesium supplements, get the mineral from your diet by consuming foods like spinach, peanut butter, and bananas.

Not everyone needs to take multivitamins

If you're eating the right foods and getting your vitamins from your diet, you don't need to take a multivitamin, says therapist Elizabeth Co.

The Mediterranean diet, rich in beans, whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables, can help you obtain these nutrients. Vegans, vegetarians, people with stomach issues, or nutrient deficiencies may benefit from adding multivitamins to their daily routine.

Anti-aging effect of taurine not yet proven

Taurine is an amino acid naturally produced in the human body. Scientists are currently studying its anti-aging effects, as it has been shown to increase the lifespan of mice.

Medical experts note that the best anti-aging methods involve physical exercise, especially high-intensity workouts with weights three times a week, and maintaining a healthy sleep routine.

Vitamin C and D supplements - not the best means to boost immunity

Vitamin C and vitamin D supplements can help support your immune system, but there is more evidence of the effectiveness of vitamin D supplements than vitamin C.

According to infectious disease specialist Michael Ben-Aderet, these supplements work best for individuals with a deficiency in vitamin C or D. He advises healthy individuals to strengthen their immunity by maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, prioritizing sleep, and getting vaccinations.
