Australia announces delivery of 49 Abrams tanks to Ukraine
Australia will transfer 49 of its outdated M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package worth $245 million, according to the Australian government website.
"This latest package, valued at approximately $245 million, will add to the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s firepower and mobility, and complement partners’ support for Ukraine’s armored brigades," the Australian government said in a statement.
It is noted that the total value of military aid provided by Australia to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion has exceeded $1.3 billion, with overall support amounting to more than $1.5 billion.
As announced in January 2022, the Australian Army will replace its M1A1 Abrams tanks with M1A2 models. To support this transition, the army will retain a small number of M1A1 Abrams tanks to help integrate the new M1A2 fleet.
Abrams tanks for Ukraine
In August, it was revealed that Australia decommissioned Abrams tanks, which Ukraine had requested. At the time, Ukraine called on Australia to provide 14 tanks and train Ukrainian crews. However, the Australian government decided to decline the request.
Nevertheless, yesterday, media reports indicated that Australia plans to deliver 49 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of a new military support package worth $245 million. The Australian government officially announced the transfer of the tanks today.
