In West Bloomfield, Michigan, a car crashed into the Temple Israel synagogue, which also houses a school. A fire broke out afterward, and gunshots were reported, CNN reports.
FBI Director Kash Patel reported that his agency’s personnel have arrived at the synagogue building. He noted that there is an "active shooter" inside but provided no further details.
American media also released footage showing smoke rising from the roof of the synagogue.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated that she is "tracking reports" of a shooter at the synagogue.
"We are working with Michigan State Police to get more information," she said.
Whitmer emphasized that "there is no place for antisemitism or violence in Michigan."
Security measures strengthened
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard announced that security around Jewish institutions in the West Bloomfield Township area will be increased.
He noted that over the past two weeks, he had been in contact with other local US law enforcement regarding potential threats of violence. Because of this incident, the synagogue was prepared and had security in place that "engaged the threat."
Earlier, US Secret Service agents neutralized an armed man who attempted to enter the residence of former US President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
The man, carrying a weapon and a fuel canister, was spotted near the north gates of the residence. US Secret Service agents and the deputy sheriff engaged with him, which escalated into a confrontation.
