At the Russian airfields of Engels and Yeysk on the eve of the drone attack, there could have been nearly 40 military aircraft present, according to satellite imagery from Planet Labs, according to Schemes.

According to satellite data from April 4, at least 8 strategic bombers, 3 Tu-160 aircraft, and 5 Tu-95 aircraft were at the Engels military airfield in the Saratov region of the Russian Federation.

The satellite also identified one Il-76 and one Tu-22 aircraft at the airfield that day.

Yeysk

On the eve of the drone attacks, at the Yeysk airfield in the Krasnodar Territory of the Russian Federation, approximately 30 aircraft were present: 10 L-39 combat training aircraft, 5 An-26 transport aircraft, and one each of An-74 and An-12 aircraft. Also present were 4 Su-27 fighters, 4 Su-25 fighters, and 1 Su-30. Helicopters such as Ka-27 and Mi-8 were also observed, along with 2 Tu-134UBL training aircraft.

Morozovsk

Recall that earlier, an OSINT researcher concluded that there could have been around 26 Su-34 fighter-bombers and four Su-30 fighters at the Morozovsk airfield. Satellite imagery from Planet Labs provided similar data regarding the number of aircraft, which indicated that on April 4, there were 29 fighters of various types, most of which were Su-34 aircraft.

Drone strikes on Russian airfields on April 5

It was previously reported that Russia complained about a massive drone attack during the night and morning. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian air defense systems allegedly "successfully shot down" 53 drones in various regions of the country. A notable aspect of this attack was that targeted cities included those where airfields are located, specifically Morozovsk in the Rostov region, Yeysk in the Krasnodar Territory, and Engels in the Saratov region.

Subsequently, a source from RBC-Ukraine reported that the SSU, together with the military and defense forces, conducted an attack on the Morozovsk airfield in Russia. At least 6 enemy aircraft were destroyed, and another 8 were significantly damaged.

Additionally, sources within the Ukrainian Defense Forces informed RBC-Ukraine that on the night of April 5, the Main Intelligence Directorate and the Armed Forces of Ukraine organized an operation involving strikes on 3 Russian airfields. Specifically, Tu-95MS bombers were damaged.
