At least 79 cases of executed Ukrainian soldiers confirmed in six months
Since late August 2024, at least 79 cases of Ukrainian prisoners of war being executed by Russian forces have been confirmed, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights confirms a growing number of executions of Ukrainian POWs by Russian forces.
The Minister stated that the enemy's war crimes could represent one of the largest campaigns of deliberate killings of prisoners of war in modern history.
"These atrocities demand urgent international action. Russia’s horrific executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war demonstrate that Ukraine confronts true beasts. The world must not only condemn but also take urgent action. We need new and effective international legal tools, and concrete steps to hold the perpetrators accountable," he added.
Russia's war crimes
Russia committed numerous war crimes during the full-scale war. These include mass killings of civilians, and attacks on schools, hospitals, and other civilian infrastructure. The most notorious atrocities occurred in Bucha, Irpin, and Mariupol, where cases of torture, executions, and violence against Ukrainians were documented.
The UN Security Council recently held a meeting on Russia's crimes against Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians.
