In the fall, there was a situation where there were no Ukrainian defenders left in Pokrovsk. But later, they managed to carry out a counteroffensive operation, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi stated this during a meeting with media leaders.
The general stated that Russia is increasing the size of its forces in the Pokrovsk direction. There are now 156,000 Russian soldiers deployed there.
At the same time, 40–50% of all cluster munitions the enemy uses along the front line are concentrated in the Pokrovsk direction. It is currently the main theater of military operations.
"At a certain point in the fall, our troops were no longer present in Pokrovsk due to limited capabilities. However, since November 15, as a result of our offensive actions, we were able to take control of about 13 square kilometers within Pokrovsk (out of the city’s total area of 29 square kilometers)," Syrskyi emphasized.
He clarified that Ukrainian soldiers continue to hold the northern part of the city roughly along the railway. Additionally, to the west of the city, Ukrainian forces managed to clear and take control of about 54 square kilometers of territory.
According to the Commander-in-Chief, the situation in the Pokrovsk area is difficult, especially during fog and rain, as the Russian forces exploit weather conditions to enter the city, which reduces the threat from drones for them.
"However, moving forward, we are only increasing the size of our forces within Pokrovsk," Syrskyi said.
Clearing a third of Pokrovsk
On November 27, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that over the past week, Ukrainian defenders had managed to clear about 11.5 square kilometers of Pokrovsk from Russian troops — over a third of the city’s territory.
On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that his soldiers had allegedly captured 70% of Pokrovsk.
By December 1, Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reportedly told Putin that Pokrovsk had been occupied.
