Armenian PM prefers talks with Azerbaijan with no Russian mediation
Armenia has hinted that it does not want Russia to mediate in peace talks with Azerbaijan. Yerevan believes that the proper format of the negotiations is bilateral, according to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
“We appreciate the support of all our international partners in the peace process. For a long time, we have been working with Azerbaijan in a bilateral format, and we can say that this format has shown some effectiveness during this period,” Pashinyan said.
He notes that a joint resolution of the border demarcation commissions was signed on August 31. The Armenian PM emphasizes that if the parties can move in a bilateral format, he considers this format to be correct.
“I also told the Russian president about this during our last telephone conversation,” he said.
At the same time, Pashinyan cannot say that he excludes work in a different format altogether.
Conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh
In September 2023, Azerbaijan conducted “anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh. The unrecognized republic surrendered, and Armenia refused to deploy its army to the region.
Later, Armenia recognized the area of Azerbaijan with the territory of Karabakh. However, no peace agreement was signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan within a year.
Russia was involved in the conflict, with its so-called peacekeepers stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Against the backdrop of the conflict, protests sometimes erupt in Armenia over the demarcation of borders with Azerbaijan.
