Argentina allows deportation for anti-country hate speech

President of Argentina Javier Milei has approved changes to immigration legislation that allow for the deportation of foreigners for spreading hate speech against the country or its national symbols. At the same time, the authorities emphasize that political and academic criticism remains protected by freedom of speech, according to Euronews.
This applies to both verbal statements and written publications. In addition, the new rules allow entry to be denied to foreigners who have previously committed similar acts.
The Argentine government stated that the reform was a response to recent expressions of hostility towards the Argentine Republic and Argentines. At the same time, the authorities did not provide specific examples of such cases.
As Euronews notes, the decision was announced following a wave of criticism directed at Argentina and the country's men's national football team after the recent World Cup.
The reform also comes amid deteriorating relations between Argentina and Brazil. President Javier Milei has repeatedly criticized Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva publicly.
After the World Cup, the Argentine leader also claimed there was a global campaign against Argentina, blaming Brazil, Mexico, and the US Democratic Party. As Euronews notes, he provided no evidence for these claims.
Does the law limit freedom of speech?
In an official statement, the president's administration emphasizes that the new rules do not apply to political, ideological, or academic criticism.
The government stressed that such statements continue to be protected by the right to freedom of speech.
