Apple is developing its own line of smart glasses called Apple Glass, which will directly compete with Meta Ray-Ban devices. The new product is part of a broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into wearable devices, according to Apple Insider.
Notably, the first generation of Apple Glass will not include full augmented reality (AR) displays. Instead, the device will feature cameras for taking photos and videos, the ability to answer calls, play music, and handle notifications from the iPhone.
The key feature will be an upgraded Siri in iOS 27. With built-in cameras and Apple Intelligence, the voice assistant will be able to analyze the user’s surroundings in real time and answer questions based on what it sees.
Design and materials
Apple plans to make the glasses a recognizable accessory on the same level as AirPods or Apple Watch. Designers are considering four types of frames:
- Bulky rectangular (similar to classic Ray-Ban styles);
- Thin rectangular;
- Large oval or round;
- Refined compact round frames;
Instead of regular plastic, developers plan to use more expensive acetate. The cameras will feature vertically oriented lenses with built-in lighting. The glasses will be released in black, dark blue, and light brown colors.
Apple’s AI device strategy
The glasses are just a small part of the tech giant’s new ecosystem. The company is also working on two more computer vision-powered devices:
- AirPods Pro with cameras: earbuds equipped with infrared sensors for spatial scanning
- AI pendant: a compact wearable with cameras and microphones designed to be worn on clothing
Apple Glass is expected to launch between 2026 and 2027. The AI pendant is not expected before 2027.
