Apple may redesign MacBook in 2025
New rumors say the Mac update cycle for the rest of 2024 and early 2025 will include the expected M4 chip updates and at least one major product redesign, reports AppleInsider.
How it is now
At the moment, only one Apple device has received the next-generation M4 chip - the iPad Pro. As Apple rolls out its next-generation chip to the Mac lineup, the company will also use the opportunity for major and minor hardware updates, starting with the iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini.
All three Mac 2024 updates are expected to retain their basic design, but Apple's move away from Lightning connectors should affect the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad accessories that come with the iMac and are available for other devices.
These accessories currently use the included Lightning-to-USB-C cables for charging, but will likely be updated to use USB-C connectors. No other major design changes to the iMac, Mac mini, or MacBook Pro form factors are expected at this time.
Coming changes
Users who are waiting for the M4-based Mac Pro, Mac Studio, and MacBook Air to be updated will have to wait until 2025. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman hints that at least one of the upcoming revisions will be marked by a “dramatic change” from the current design.
If true, this is the first report that a Mac design change is possible in the near future.
The most likely candidate for a major redesign is the Mac Mini, which has been using basically the same design since 2010, changing only the ports and other connectors in line with general industry trends. Some Mac products did not receive the M3 chip at all, including the budget MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Mac Studio.
The M4 chip, to be used in future updates, is said to be significantly more powerful than the M3. The graphics processing and neural engine may receive major upgrades over the M3 chip, based on early performance tests.
