The advancement of artificial intelligence technology may lead to the iPhone losing its relevance within the next decade, reports MacRumors.

Why the iPhone may become obsolete in the future

"You may not need an ‌iPhone‌ 10 years from now, as crazy as it sounds," said Apple’s senior vice president of internet software and services, Eddy Cue.

According to him, in the future, smartphones could be replaced by a combination of wearable electronics and advanced artificial intelligence capable of intuitively performing user tasks. Currently, the iPhone remains Apple’s main source of revenue, but the company has yet to find a product capable of fully replacing it.

Apple’s attempts to move beyond smartphones have had mixed results: the electric vehicle project was shut down, and the mixed reality headset Vision Pro has so far failed to meet commercial expectations.

At the same time, the company has shifted its focus to developments in robotics and wearable devices. One of its long-term goals is to create AR glasses that could serve as an alternative to the iPhone.

However, Eddy Cue emphasized that this is still just speculation, and Apple will continue to develop the iPhone lineup. In the coming years, a foldable model is expected, and by 2027, the company may introduce a smartphone with a full-screen display with no cutouts for the camera or Face ID.

Previous attempts to replace smartphones have failed: the wearable Humane AI Pin and the mini gadget Rabbit R1 were criticized for weak functionality.

Eddy Cue also commented on possible changes in Apple’s search business. He stated that AI-based search could eventually displace traditional search engines.

Apple is considering integrating solutions from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity into the Safari browser. This is especially relevant amid ongoing antitrust investigations: if collaboration with Google is banned, Apple could lose more than $20 billion a year in payments for setting Google as the default search engine.
