The skincare market is overwhelmed with products claiming to preserve youthful and radiant skin. But according to a plastic surgeon, there's only one ingredient you should prioritize, according to The Sun.

What you need to know about skin aging

Signs of skin aging can vary depending on your facial type and lifestyle. However, some of the most common effects include wrinkles, age spots, roughness, scars, and loss of skin elasticity.

Cleansers and creams made with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide can help alleviate some of these less desirable changes.

Key anti-aging ingredient

Dermatologist and MD Christopher Costa states that retinol is the primary fighter for youthful skin.

"Retinol stimulates collagen production, improves skin texture, increases skin firmness, and reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage," says the expert.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It is applied topically and can be found in various forms, including creams, gels, lotions, ointments, and serums.

Moreover, retinol speeds up cell turnover, which helps shed dead skin cells.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, retinol fights acne, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, psoriasis, stretch marks, and wrinkles.

"Retinol has many benefits for clearing skin and preventing aging. It increases the thickness and elasticity of your skin, slows melanin production, reduces inflammation, and prevents pore clogging," the report states.

The anti-aging ingredient is also quite affordable. Depending on the manufacturer, products containing it start at 400 hryvnias. The dermatologist notes that it's much cheaper than Botox.

Using retinol

Since retinol can easily irritate the skin, people using it for the first time are advised to apply it only once every few days.

Common side effects include redness, itching, or burning, which should subside after the first application if they don't, stop using the product and consult a dermatologist.
