Former heavyweight champion, British boxer Anthony Joshua, was involved in a serious car accident while in Nigeria, according to Punch.
Circumstances of the crash
The incident occurred on a highway near Makun, Ogun State. A Lexus SUV carrying 35-year-old Anthony Joshua as a passenger collided at high speed with a truck that was stopped on the roadside or roadway.
Joshua had traveled to his ancestral homeland for a vacation following his recent victory over Jake Paul.
There were four people in the luxury vehicle at the time of the accident. Joshua was seated in the back directly behind the driver.
The boxer was traveling in a convoy of two vehicles, with his security team following in a Pajero SUV.
Joshua's condition and crash consequences
Despite significant damage to the vehicle, the former world champion avoided serious injuries.
According to medics and witnesses, Joshua sustained only minor injuries and was able to exit the wreckage on his own.
However, two other passengers, seated next to the driver and next to Joshua, were killed instantly in the impact.
Witness accounts
Local resident Adeniyi Oroho, who witnessed the crash, said bystanders began rescue efforts before emergency services arrived.
“We started stopping passing cars to help the injured. Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived within minutes, but unfortunately they could not save the two Lexus passengers,” Oroho said.
Authorities in Nigeria are currently investigating all circumstances of the crash, including why the truck was on the road at the time of the collision.
Joshua’s team has not yet provided detailed comments on the boxer’s plans following the tragic incident.
